Geat fall park in virginia

Great Falls Park, a site that is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, is an 800 acre park located along the Potomac River 14 miles upriver from Washington D.C. The park is known for two things, its scenic beauty at the head of Potomac River fall line and the historic Potomac Canal.
The Visitor Center features a short slide program, which is shown throughout the day. Discover the 200-year old Potomac Canal, considered an engineering feat of its time and George Washington's role as a leader in establishing this important trade and communication link into the western lands. See on display a preserved piece of a canal lock gate, revealing the craftsmanship, and ingenuity of the age and view a three dimensional diorama of the Great Falls and Potomac Canal. Other displays feature geologic features of the Potomac River Gorge and Great Falls, floods, nature displays, and recreational activities. A hands-on touch table and other activities are located in the Children's Room.
Picnic tables and grills are available near the Visitor Center. Fifteen miles of trails provide ample hiking along the Potomac River Gorge below the Great Falls, along the historic Potomac Canal (ask for a self-guided brochure at the Visitor Center), and along upland oak deciduous forest.
Overlook 1
Heading downstream from the visitor center, the first overlook you meet is Overlook 1, where you get close-up views of the falls. Here the falls appear the mightiest, plunging about 40 feet through a rocky gorge. An interpretive sign here describes the fish of the Potomac (shad, bass, etc). You can look across the Potomac and see the Falls Overlook in Maryland. In winter, right after snowstorms, this trail may be icy.
Overlook 2
Out of the three overlooks, Overlook 2 perhaps affords the best view. From here, you get a full view of the falls, as well as the Potomac River plunging into Mather Gorge. With the Potomac dropping down giant rocks, this sight is pretty incredible. One disadvantage is now you're a bit farther from the falls. A sign here describes early tourism at the falls.
Overlook 3
Overlook 3 is the farthest of the overlooks from the falls itself, and the views aren't so great as the first two. You can't see Mather Gorge, either. Still, it is worth it to see the last of the chain of overlooks. From here, the falls are still very beautiful. Interpretive signs here explain the floods of the Potomac River, and show the falls in three stages: dry, regular, and flood.
Potomac Canal
The Potomac Canal runs through the center of the park. It was constructed by George Washington in the late 18th century to boost trade to the western territories by the Potomac River. Using a system of locks, the canal would raise ships heading upstream 70 feet to the river above the falls. However, the canal stopped operating in 1828 after competition from the C&O Canal across the river, and has eventually decayed. You can now hike along the remains of the canal along the Canal Trail, which leads a little over 1/2 a mile from the visitor center.

Later, a manor house was constructed on the property, but was destroyed by fire. The present Ferry Plantation house, built in 1830, used a number of bricks salvaged from the earlier structures. As one of the main tourist attractions in Virginia Beach, the plantation house is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, is free.

Visit to San Antonio

San Antonio is a great little city to come face to face with some history. It may not have the big tourist ring of New York City or San Francisco, but it's one of America's oldest cities.

In the early 1700's San Antonio was colonized by Spain and since then Native Americans, Old Mexico and the deep South have mixed and blended to make for a very interesting city.

It's a good idea to start your visit to San Antonio with a little history, with the Alamo. It's beyond any doubt the first tourist attraction in all the state of Texas. It was built as one of San Antonio's five Spanish colonial missions in the 18th century. During the Texas Revolution it gained fame as the site of the epic 1836 battle.

That's when Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett fought and died in the Alamo. You'll think it's smaller than you expected, when you first see it and it is. That's why it was built as a mission and not as a fort. You only will have to pay for parking at a downtown lot, admission is free. It's right near the River Walk in the heart of town.

Whenever you would like to see more of the five missions beyond the Alamo, visit San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. It will take you to the other four missions. You can move around from mission to mission on the eight mile Missions Bike and Hike Trail. Every few blocks on the sidewalks you will find a map of downtown San Antonio posted making it really easy to explore the Alamo and the River Walk.

The River Walk, also named Paseo del Rio, is also downtown. Only twenty feet below the buzz of activity of downtown streets, the River Walk follows the gentle bends of San Antonio River. Along it you will find hotels, restaurants, museums and historic sites. You can take a cruise on the river which goes on for a few miles while a tour guide gives you amusing facts, or you can walk along the banks.

Along the banks of the river you'll the historic district of La Villita, originally established by Spanish soldiers stationed at the Alamo. In 1835 the Mexican Army surrendered and Texas got its independence at La Villita. It was in the next year when the Battle of the Alamo was fought to try and win Texas back. Nowadays the historic buildings have been turned into galleries and shops for arts and crafts and restaurants.

Near downtown you'll find the Historic Market Square, also known as the Mexican Market or El Mercado. This is the largest Mexican market in the state and it pulsates on friendly people and bold colors. You can stroll beneath the Mexican tissue paper streamers, the "papel picado". There you can purchase beautiful turquoise and silver jewelry. There are handmade belts and buckles, necklaces and earrings from Mexico. Taste Mexican candies and even purchase a pinata to put them in. If you just prefer to soak it in, have a rest by the fountain while enjoying the sounds of mariachis.

Due to deep Latino roots, you'll taste some great Tex-Mex food here. Besides you'll get some great San Antonio Texas barbecue. Don't worry about going hungry, their culinary repertoire is really large and diverse. Merely you need good walking shoes and an appetite for fun and history to explore San Antonio Texas.

California Highway 1-Carmel to San Francisco

Driving California Highway 1, in the north, this part goes from Carmel to San Francisco along Monterey Bay, the Pacific Ocean and Half Moon Bay.

Right next to Carmel is Pacific Grove, a scenic little town which offers some great B&Bs. If you want to play golf on Monterey Bay see if you can book a tee-off time at the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. Whenever you stop for lunch at one of the restaurants at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, the Lodge, or Poppy Hills, you may get your ticket validated and get your gate fee back. You may be able to talk your way in without the fee if you tell the gate keeper that you will be stopping for lunch. It's worth a try.

You can probably find more affordable motels and B&Bs in Monterey than in Carmel. You should see Fisherman's Wharf. Most of it has been turned into restaurants and touristy markets, but it's really worth a visit. You can find some historic building nearby from Spanish times and from when Monterey was the capital of California.

What to see in San Fransisco

When you think about San Francisco, the first things that may get into your mind are the Cable Cars and the Golden Gate Bridge. Go ahead, see one and ride the other.

Both are unique symbols of San Francisco, but like any "must see" metropolis in the world, you can find lots of things to see.

Visit the largest Chinatown outside of Asia and explore up and down the hills. Come across the Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue at Bush Street and you'll know you're about to go into this iconic neighborhood.

Take a walk along the Embarcadero ATT Park where the San Francisco Giants play is at one end. Hold on in the historic Ferry Building. Ferries still come and go from Oakland and Sausalito, but it is full of delis and excellent restaurants. You can take a walk all the way to the North Beach or Fisherman's Wharf areas or you can use up trolleys.

The Pier 39 area and Fisherman's Wharf offer a lot of attractions, shops and Bay view restaurants. It is a popular area, so keep hold of your wallet. Watch the sea lions that lounge on the docks. Take a look to the historic ships at the Hyde Street Pier.

Visit the Aquarium of the Bay where you can watch marine animals as you walk through 300 feet of crystal clear tunnels. If you present your ticket or transit pass they will give you a discount.

Take a Blue and Gold Fleet boat trip of San Francisco Bay. They offer some different including one called "Escape From the Rock" which rounds Alcatraz, but doesn't land on it. The Blue and Gold Fleet also provides ferry service to Angel Island, Oakland, Sausalito, and Tiburon,

If possible catch a tour to Alcatraz. You'll learn all about notorious convicts and unsuccessful escapes from this notorious rock and enjoy impressive views of the skyline of San Francisco. You should plan this early in advance. A private ferry company under contract with the National Park Service offers the access to the island. In summer tickets frequently sell out up to a week in advance. For more details visit the Alcatraz Cruises web site.

The Presidio is a former military post, a historic one at that. Now it is a National Park. It's a great place to go through and to hike forest trails. It was established by Spanish explorers in 1776 and was an army post for three nations for 218 years. The Main Post's historic buildings house exhibits, and the parade grounds spill down to the water with stunning views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge.

Walk the Golden Gate Bridge. That renowned orange span is the majestic background of the city. Walk the 1.7 miles (3 km) to Marin County and watch boats pass down the bridge 200 feet below and get a great photo opportunity of the city.

Visit Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum, the botanical gardens, the Victorian Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden, and especially the newly reopened California Academy of Sciences, "the only place on the planet with a planetarium, an aquarium, a natural history museum, and a 4-story rain forest all under one roof." And speaking of roofs, you must have seen pictures of their new "green" roof!

If you have time and transportation there's more to see. Visit the Coit Tower, Palace of Fine Arts, and the Legion of Honor Museum. Go all the way to the Great Highway and Ocean Beach to see the Pacific Ocean and take a lunch at the Cliff House.

And then get back to the center of the city and ride a cable car one more time. You may remember what Tony Bennet said, "...those little cable cars, climb halfway to the stars..." An outstanding idea to think back to San Francisco. Whenever possible you should stay a few days in San Francisco. Check out the best Hotel Deals and find an affordable accommodation that suits your personal needs.

Vacation in San Francisco

You're planning a trip to San Francisco. It's your dream to see the Cable Cars and the Golden Gate Bridge, maybe also Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf. The question will be, how are you going to get around?

San Francisco is a compact city located on a peninsula between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. But even with a compact city you need to consider what to see in San Francisco and how to experience this location. In either case it's a good idea to check for Top Hotel Deals in San Francisco to book an accommodation from where you'll start your sightseeing trip.

If you come to the city by car, be prepared for traffic regardless what time of day you are arriving. As in most cities parking is a problem. In that location isn't enough parking and it can to be very costly.

Next point you really have to think about are the hills of San Francisco. The hills are part of the beauty and charm of the city. At first glance driving on hills seems not dangerous. But San Francisco has many streets that go up or down these hills, and a few of them are in truth steep. Locals occasionally enjoy in scaring friends on streets which appear to vanish into thin air with merely a yellow sign that caution against a "grade" or a "hill".

Whenever you're driving on one of these streets let us assure you the street goes forward on the other side of the point of intersection. Just make sure you've had your brakes checked. If you're not used to driving precipitous hills, they can be absolute fearsome. Most of these steep hills you can find on Nob Hill and Pacific, Russian Hill, Dolores and Buena Vista Heights. All of the most precipitous hills come along with stop signs at the top. Almost any cars you can rent in the U.S. are automatics and that's properly what you need in San Francisco.

Parking on the hills may also be a challenge whether it's perpendicular parking, which it often is on hills, or parallel parking. Just make sure you don't fall out of the automobile if you're on the downward-sloping side. It's a law that you always have to "curb" your wheels when parking on a hill to prevent uncontrolled cars. When looking downhill, turn the wheels of your car to the right. When parking uphill, turn your wheels to the left on a road curb. When parking uphill on a road without any curb stone, turn the wheels of your car to the right.

Market Street intersects the city diagonally. As a matter of fact, a lot of streets cross at odd angles. San Francisco isn't a city with an easy square grid of streets. There are also a lot of one way streets. All things considered San Francisco can be an infuriating spot to drive yourself.

Because San Francisco has more effective public transportation than most American cities, it can be a better choice getting round using public transportation. Especially up and down those hills to Chinatown, Nob Hill, Fisherman's Wharf, or North Beach you should take cable cars. Along the Embarcadero and Market Street ride on historic trolleys and buses. For the ride alone it is a pleasure to take them.

The Muni has a large system. The rate for basic tickets is $1.50; the cable cars cost $5.00. There are "Muni Passport" for 1, 3 or 7 days available. It can be a great deal, you are able to hop on and off without having to pay for each ride. Muni Passport includes the cable cars, but not BART. That is the subway that provides one line through the city. This passport you can get at many places in the city. For details look into the Muni website. Besides their internet site will assist you plan your tour through San Francisco online. It is also important to get a good transit map. They are offered at drugstores or transit booths or.

Another option is to walk between most of the popular places. You can reach most areas safe and easy and on foot, but have in mind that there are those hills you'll run into, therefore don't ignore taxis. You cannot go everywhere by Muni, so take hold of a taxicab when you want.

Of course, it is possible to drive in San Francisco, but you can explore it more comfortable with your own two feet, public transportation, and taxis. Driving with your car in San Francisco is a lot less stress. But the choice is yours, just enjoy your trip through San Francisco.

Captiva Island

Captiva Island is an island in Lee County in southwest Florida, located just offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Originally part of neighboring Sanibel Island to the southeast, it was severed when a hurricane's storm surge washed away a new channel, called Blind Pass, which has now been filled in with sand. A project opening the pass again will be completed in 2009. Like Sanibel, Captiva is a barrier island to Pine Island (to the east of Captiva and north of Sanibel), however it is much narrower. The only automobile access to Captiva is via the Sanibel Causeway and Sanibel-Captiva Road. Captiva was homesteaded in 1888 and a tiny cemetery next to The Chapel by the Sea has the grave of the original resident, William Herbert Binder (1850-1932), an Austrian. Half the island is in private ownership, with "Millionare's Row", luxury homes on gulf and bay side of "San-Cap" road. The South Seas Island Resort entry gate is at the end of this road. Roosevelt Channel on the east side of the island, is named for Theodore Roosevelt who fished there.

North Captiva Island or Upper Captiva is another island, in turn severed from Captiva in a 1921 hurricane, creating Redfish Pass. North Captiva has power from lines that originate on the north end of Captiva, and is privately owned. With about 300 homes built and 300 vacant lots, the island is about half way to build-out. Since the island can be accessed by boat or small plane only, North Captiva real estate values are generally lower than on Captiva.
Captiva was seriously damaged in August 2004 when the eastern eyewall of Hurricane Charley struck North Captiva, immediately before hitting Charlotte Harbor to the north-northeast. Initial reports indicated that 160 buildings were destroyed and another 160 seriously damaged. Although there are reports that the storm surge cut a path 400 yards (366 m) wide across the narrowest part of North Captiva, separating the island, local fishermen have said that the separation of the two halves of the island was actually caused by a series of tornados that passed through the area in September of 2001.[citation needed] The new pass has not been formally named, but the locals call it "Charley Pass" or "The North Cap Gap". It has since filled in with sand and reunited the island.

Captiva is the part time home of many famous people and was the full-time home of world renowned artist Robert Rauschenberg. South Seas Island Resort and Yacht Harbor, a 330-acre (1.3 km2) resort, resides on the northern two miles (3 km) of Captiva Island.

According to local folklore, Captiva got its name because the pirate captain José Gaspar (Gasparilla) held his female prisoners on the island for ransom or worse. However, the supposed existence of Jose Gaspar is sourced from an advertising brochure of an early 20th century developer and may be a fabrication.

Though the Alps crosses eight countries, the Swiss Alps are probably the most popular. Mont Blanc, at 4810 meters, is the highest peak of the Alps. The Alps are famous for the breathtaking fir forests and the clear lakes that hide in the many mountain crevices.

The Alps of Switzerland are also a godsend for adventure sports lovers. Hiking, trekking, rappelling - all is made possible due to the many gradients that the Alps slopes provide. (See more on Adventure Sports in Switzerland).

The delightful summer and winter resorts in the Alps have tourists flocking to them from across the world. The Switzerland tourist resorts are mostly located in the Alps, providing a great holiday getaway for those who love the mountains. Come winter, and the entire range is converted into a winter wonderland.

The resort towns of St. Moritz and Zermatt see droves of ski enthusiasts trooping in, while the Interlaken's cable cars and funicular rail become very active, taking frequent trips to the summit of the high Alpine peaks.
